De Pelen, known for its rich biodiversity, was confronting ecological challenges stemming from historical agricultural practices and urban expansion. Staatsbosbeheer ecologists pinpointed critical areas needing intervention, with a focus on rejuvenating natural habitats such as the Grauwveen wetlands and various pools. These are pivotal for a wide array of wildlife, including bird species like the Crane and the Lapwing, and amphibians such as salamanders.
