Kuehne + Nagel, one of the world's leading logistics service providers, is coming to Regensburg. Goodman is developing a logistics centre in GVZ bayernhafen. The symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for this project took place on 24 January and brought together representatives of both companies as well as politicians and officials from the region. The logistics facility, which is approximately 16,000 sqm, consists of two units and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2019.
Kuehne + Nagel is moving into a new, modern logistics facility in Regensburg built by Goodman. Goodman is building a 16,000 sqm logistics centre (plus mezzanine and offices) on the 35,000 sqm site.
Growth driver for the logistics region of Regensburg
bayernhafen in Regensburg is the logistics hub when it comes to freight traffic in Eastern Bavaria and inland shipping throughout Bavaria. GVZ is an important transhipment point and links the Regensburg area with international traffic routes. This 185-hectare harbour area – comparable with 259 football pitches – is home to more than 80 companies, creating around 1,800 jobs.
Joachim Zimmermann, managing director of bayernhafen, is pleased with the settlement of Goodman: "The project is a successful example for our strategy of reusing land through conversion instead of developing on greenfield sites. This site lay fallow for around ten years. With the purchase, we have woken up the property from its 'sleeping beauty status', so to speak. For example, bayernhafen removed the remaining foundation and parts of the building as well as contaminated sites. As a landowner, bayernhafen ensures that space is used sparingly by means of a kind of permanent conversion with rental and leasehold agreements.
"We are looking forward to offer our customers comprehensive services in our new logistics centre, which meets the highest standards of safety, quality and speed in all aspects of complex supply chains, product storage and transport," says Henning Mack, regional manager Bavaria at Kühne + Nagel. „The new building is a clear commitment to the Regensburg location and to the strong East Bavarian economy. We are creating the infrastructure so that our customers can continue to develop in the best possible way". Kuehne + Nagel has also secured the right of first refusal for the second unit of the new logistics centre.
Christof Prange, Head of Business Development at Goodman Germany, explains: "bayernhafen is a logistics hotspot for freight traffic and inland shipping in Bavaria. With more than 400,000 employees, the logistics sector in Germany's largest federal state is a real growth driver, which is why we made an early effort to find logistics space in the region and will examine further space for development there."
Jürgen Huber, Mayor of Regensburg city, adds: "It is wonderful that Regensburg is situated along a waterway and a trade route for centuries, therefore it is a port city. Logistics are becoming more and more important and must be organised in a more and more environmentally compatible way."
