Goodman and GLX open logistics centre in Berlin East Freienbrink freight village

Goodman and GLX Global Logistic Services today celebrated the opening of a new 17,000 sqm logistics centre in Berlin’s East Freienbrink freight village. Initially, the logistics service provider will use 12,000 sqm of the new building as a European hub for the spare parts logistics and after-sales service of its customer Knorr-Bremse, the world’s leading manufacturer of braking systems for rail and commercial vehicles. Hendrik Fischer, State Secretary in the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy for the state of Brandenburg, and Ute Bankwitz, Project Manager from Wirtschaftsförderung Land Brandenburg GmbH attended today’s opening event.

The new property offers GLX a brand new warehouse with excellent sustainability features, built to Goodman’s highest quality standards. The Group will use the new facility to consolidate two existing logistics centres based in Berlin and Augsburg under one roof. “The new logistics centre is a flagship project for us. On the one hand, with this modern property in an excellent location, we improve the efficiency of our services to Knorr-Bremse; on the other hand, it marks the start of further growth for GLX,” said Roland Becker, Managing Director of GLX Global Logistic Services.

Berlin Ost Freienbrink

The modern propery has a total area of 17,000 sqm, including 15,200 sqm of logistics area and 1,800 sqm for a mezzanine, for offices and social areas, as well as 500 sqm of outdoor storage space. The facility is fitted with LED lighting throughout and will shortly receive the gold certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

As one of the leading international property developers, Goodman has access to a range of sites and was able to offer GLX this prime location in Berlin East Freienbrink. GLX, who will manage the spare parts distribution for the European customer base of Knorr-Bremse from Berlin in the future, will benefit from the strategic location of the freight village, with outstanding connection to the trans-European road and rail network. In addition, the new Berlin-Brandenburg airport is less than 30 km away.

Property partner for medium-sized companies

Goodman has already developed over 300,000 sqm of logistics space for customers in the automotive sector and managed over 1 mio. sqm of logistics space for contract logistics providers and transport companies.

In the past years, the capital region of Berlin-Brandenburg has become a major European location for logistics. The opening of the logistics centre today highlights this good development.”

Berlin’s bright logistics future: further developments planned

With its excellent location close to a population of 3.5 mio. the German capital, Berlin is recognized throughout Europe as a booming logistics market. The region is served by a network of nearly 800 kilometres of autobahn that is part of the trans-European network of north-south and east west axes. Several successfully developed freight villages in the region further compliment this excellent road infrastructure.

Berlin-Brandenburg’s status as one of the leading logistics locations in Germany is underpinned by Goodman’s continued investment in the region: By the start of 2018, the property group will develop another logistics property in Berlin South Großbeeren freight village. The new property, which totals 13,500 sqm, can be subdivided into units starting from 6,550 sqm. It will also benefit from several sustainability features, including energy efficient LED-lighting with special automated steering, insulated dark tube radiators to preserve natural resources and landscaping with indigenous trees and plants. The project will be certified by DGNB and is expected to obtain a GOLD rating.
