REWE Group, one of the largest food retail groups in Europe, required a new property solution to enable it to supply fresh fruit and vegetables more quickly and efficiently in the region of Leipzig/Halle, Dresden and Berlin. The new hub warehouse would supply the company’s regional warehouses and its REWE brand of supermarkets.

REWE Group’s new fruit and vegetable hub warehouse was developed and delivered in six months. Our flexible leasing solution was one of the principal reasons the company chose to work with Goodman. That we could tailor the property to include the required refrigeration technology, to meet the food retailer’s precise requirements, also played a role in the company’s choice. Goodman will manage all aspects of the property for the entire term of the lease.
Leipzig’s South III freight village (GVZ) was identified as the ideal location for the hub warehouse. It offers REWE Group optimal transport connections to its regional warehouses in Berlin, Dresden and Leipzig/Halle. The GVZ is located at a junction on the A14 motorway and Leipzig/Halle airport is just five minutes away.
The new 11,000 sqm development matches specific requirements for food retail. The 10,000 sqm logistics space comprises two temperature-controlled cooling zones to allow for the proper interim storage of fruit and vegetables. They are then delivered fresh every day. The first zone is cooled to between 4°C and 5°C. In the second, the temperature ranges from 10°C to 12°C. Special insulation of loading ramps, external walls, floor and roof ensures efficient usage of cooling energy.
The property has been granted silver certification by the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council). With 38 loading docks, the warehouse facilitates the rapid and reliable transhipment of goods. The number of docks is about four times higher than that of a standard logistics property on the market.
By consolidating fruit and vegetables in a single hub warehouse, REWE Group has been able to optimise its logistical processes
for demand-based supply to regional warehouses and stores.
The freshness and quality of this sensitive product category is further improved with the new property solution as the transhipment of produce is more efficient.
